We lay still, closer than when we were coupled. Her face was soft with peace. I will marry her, I thought.

Out in the living room, the telephone rang. ‘Ignore it,’ I said.

‘You know I can’t.’ She pulled on a dressing gown and went to answer it. ‘Hello … yes …’ I sensed the change in her voice. ‘But they can’t do that … Yes, of course I’ll come … Yes, but I’ve got the bleeper … Yes, in about 20 minutes.’

I didn’t recognise the person who came back in. ‘You bastard! You complete–’

‘What is it, Holly?’

She looked around, picked up a cut-glass scent bottle. ‘Gordon’s been arrested!’ she screamed, hurling the bottle at me. ‘Get out of here! Get out, get out!’
